The basics

What is NDIS community access?

NDIS community access, sometimes called community participation, is support that helps a person take part in life outside the home, social and recreational activities, classes and groups, using transport, volunteering, and building the everyday skills that come with getting out into the world.

At Empower and Shine, community access is about more than filling a day. A trained, screened support worker goes alongside your young adult to help them try things, meet people, and grow in confidence, at a pace that suits them.

Our community access

Community access that goes beyond a care centre.

Rather than a one-size-fits-all community access care centre, our support is shaped around the person, one-to-one or in a small group, out in the community or at centre-based activities when that is what your young adult enjoys.

Who it’s for

Is NDIS community access right for your young adult?

Community access suits young adults who want to do more with their week, get out more often, try new activities, build independence, or simply have consistent support to enjoy the community safely.

It works well on its own, and it works well alongside supported independent living or respite, using the same trusted workers. If you are not sure whether community access sits in your plan, we will help you work it out.

Community access questions, answered

NDIS community access: frequently asked questions.

What is community access under the NDIS?
NDIS community access, also called community participation, is support that helps a person take part in activities outside the home, social, recreational, educational and skill-building, so they can build confidence, independence and connection out in the community.
What does NDIS community access include?
It can include outings and social activities, sport and hobbies, joining groups or classes, using public transport, volunteering or work readiness, and building everyday skills, all with a support worker alongside your young adult.
Do you run a community access care centre?
Our community access is flexible and person-centred rather than a fixed community access care centre. Support can be one-to-one or in a small group, out in the community or at centre-based activities when that is what suits your young adult best.
How is community access funded in my NDIS plan?
Community access is usually funded under Core supports, as assistance with social and community participation. As a registered NDIS provider we support self-managed, plan-managed and NDIA-managed participants, and we help you understand what is available.
Where do you provide community access?
We are based in Cranbourne, Victoria, and provide community access for young adults across Cranbourne and the surrounding South East Melbourne area.
Can community access be combined with SIL or respite?
Yes. Many of the young adults in our supported independent living homes and short term respite also use community access, delivered by the same trusted, trained and screened support workers.
