The basics

What is short term accommodation (STA)?

Short Term Accommodation (STA) is the NDIS funding that pays for a short stay away from home, including the support, the accommodation, meals and activities. It is most often used for respite, a planned break that gives families time to rest while their young adult is well cared for.

At Empower and Shine, short term respite happens in warm, home-like settings in Cranbourne, not clinical facilities, with the same trained, screened workers your young adult can get to know. Whether it is a single night or a couple of weeks, it is designed to feel like a good stay, not just a stopgap.

Who it’s for

Is short term respite right for your family?

Short term respite suits families who need a break, whether that is a planned holiday, a busy work stretch, a family event, or simply time to recharge. It also gives young adults a change of scene, new activities, and a taste of time away from home with the right support around them.

It can be a single night, a weekend, or a longer stay, and it can be planned in advance or arranged at shorter notice where a place is available. If you are not sure whether STA sits in your plan, we will help you work it out.

Is respite the same as short term accommodation?
Respite is the reason for the stay, a break, while short term accommodation (STA) is the NDIS funding that pays for it. When you take short term respite with us, it is funded through STA in your plan.
How is short term respite funded under the NDIS?
It is funded through Short Term Accommodation in your NDIS plan, often up to around 28 days per year depending on your plan. As a registered provider we can support self-managed, plan-managed and NDIA-managed participants, and we help you understand what is available.
